Emotional Stress: Effects and Symptoms

Emotional stress can be defined as the feeling of losing control over your everyday life events and worrying over your future to the extent that it affects you affects ones health adversely. Prolonged emotional stress can even have serious repercussions and life threatening.

Reasons for emotional stress

  1. Job Pressure. Being undervalued or not recognized for your hard work and efforts or being underpaid can all lead to stress. And also being unhappy or dissatisfied can have the effect.
  2. Another reason could be family conflicts, whether sibling rivalry or between spouses.
  3. There are a lot of health issues also that can cause stress .Heart problems cause stress and stress too can cause heart problems

Effective Therapies

The most effective is psychotherapy which if taken regularly over a period of time can have healing effects on the mind. Another is holistic   counseling which involves the body, the mind and the spirit inducing better emotional and mental health. Then there is Spiritual counseling said to heal a person from within. Another therapy is the ESR or the emotional Stress Release technique. This involves the relaxing of the head muscles with massage keeping the eyes closed. It may take a few minutes to an hour. This is a technique developed by doctors, acupuncturists and chiropractors based on Kinesiology. A process of muscle testing is used to detect flaws in the balance of the body which cause emotional problems. Other helpful means include yoga and meditation. This helps a person’s mind to be in the moment. People should try not to be overwhelmed by emotional stress. Instead try to understand what triggered it and how to prevent it.

Helpful tips for handling emotional stress

  • Trying to get into more physical activities like exercise or indulging in a hobby which involves mind and body.
  • Talking to somebody and letting your feelings out whether to a counselor, therapist or a close friend about what is bothering you.
  • Trying not to burden one self mentally and setting emotional limits.
  • Taking care of ones overall health
  • Avoid being on your own very often.
  • Doing things one at a time.
  • Relaxing every now and then by taking a break from work or even taking short holidays to get away from a situation that is troubling you.

One should keep in mind that emotional stress can become a health problem if not taken care of .It can deplete energy from the body, cause ulcers, insomnia, high blood pressure and heart disease. Although positive emotional stress brings flavor to our lives, negative emotions can do the opposite. Try to be positive.
